Lake Atitlan- Guatemala

One of our adventures in Guatemala was visiting one of the most exotic destinations in the world- Lake Atitlan. This lake is located in the highlands of southwestern Guatemala and is coined as one of the most beautiful lakes in world.  In Mayan “Atitlan” translates to “the place where the rainbow gets its colors” which is stunningly beautiful. From Panajachel, in a small water taxi “a lancha” we bounced across Lake Atitlan where we visited three different colorful Mayan towns that ring Lake Atitlan.  The towns we visited were San Marcos La Laguna, San Pedro La Laguna, and Santiago Atitlan. This lake is formed by massive eruptions that took place 85,000 years ago, cradled by dormant volcanoes, and thick with lush green vegetation. Lake Atitlan is so deep (more than 1000 feet) that portions of it have never been explored.

Above are views from Panajachel of the San Pedro Volcano and below is me trying to start off the "lancha".

Beautiful hilltop houses are cascading throughout Lake Atitlan's shore.

My sister Madelyn and I in the lancha going to our various destinations.

If you ever get a chance to visit Guatemala, make sure to visit Lake Atitlan as we had a beautiful time exploring the lake and visiting different Mayan towns.
